Recycle your Bike

200I use the bike room on a regular basis and I have noticed that several bikes have not been used this year. If you do not want to use your bike anymore, you could consider donating it to Charlie’s Freewheels on Queen Street E., near Sherbourne. Charlie’s has a Summer Build-a-Bike program where it will accept used bikes in any condition and use them to teach boys and girls to build and maintain bicycles. When the bike is ready for the road and the kids have completed a free bike safety course, Charlie’s will give them a free bike. If you would like to donate your used bike but do not want to take it to Charlie’s, I would be happy to take it there for you. Let me know if I can help you to donate your used bike to a child in the neighbourhood.

Balcony Privacy Screens

At last week’s AGM, there was some discussion about privacy screens. Several people, particularly those on the north side of the building, have expressed interest in installing a screen on their balcony.

The Decor Committee has been discussing the issue for some time and would like to encourage residents to follow certain guidelines in order to keep uniformity of the building.

  • Screens should be wood (i.e. cedar or bamboo) or dark/espresso in colour.
  • Screens should not extend more than 30″ above the top of the balcony.
  • Screens should be securely fastened without being permanently fixed to the concrete balcony walls as per the condominium’s bylaws.

A few residents have already installed screens on their balconies, and we thought it might be helpful for others to see what they’ve done. Here are a couple of pictures, which might give you ideas for your own balcony:

Sam and Judy recently purchased a bamboo screen for about $150 at Home Hardware in Niagara. It’s approximately 8 feet long and 5′ tall, and successfully blocks wind and provides a sense of privacy.

Roy purchased two three-panel cedar screens from Home Depot. The item can be found on their website: click here.

Possible Condo Social Events – Your Feedback is requested

The Social Committee has given thought to some possible other events that may or may not be of interest to residents of 192 Jarvis.   We are publishing these ideas to determine if there is any interest. If so, please email us at

Outside of the Condo Building. In both case reservations are required. Right now we’re just trying to gauge interest in two possible outings:

  1. Dinner out at the Blake House Restaurant on Sunday July 17 at 6.00 PM. The restaurant is located on Jarvis Street, short walk north from our building. The evening will be part of Summerlicious.
  2. An evening of 60’s Folk music at the Free Times Cafe on Wednesday, August 18, 6.30 – 9.30 PM. The Cafe is located on College, just west of Spadina. Join us for dinner, drinks and two hour of 60’s folk music everyone knows. There is a cover charge of $10, Meal and drinks are separate.

In the Condo Building. For each of these activities we want to determine the interest.

  1. Bridge or Euchre – Indicate which days you can attend, and whether you prefer afternoon or evenings.
  2. Academy Awards Night event. – Next years awards. Hosted by an owner.
  3. Condo Open House Tour of 192 Jarvis. Owners offer to open their units for the event. Owner entertains for 30 minutes and then we move onto the next unit. Emphasis not only on Renos, but chance to meet neighbours. Do not have to open your condo to participate.
  4. Garage Sale. Plan for the Fall. To be held in back patio. chance to get rid of some of the “stuff” in your condo.  Details to be worked out.
  5. Visit to TIFF.  King Street West. Offers free tours and able to view a wide range of movies for free in their theatre.
  6. A Talk by Bruce Bell – historian.  Would look to tailor a presentation related to this area of Jarvis Street. A 1 – 2 hour presentation. There would be a small individual charge. Could hold here and include a neighbouring building.
  7. Ronnie Burkett concert – Once performance dates in Toronto are announced, we will advise.
  8. Sunday Brunch at the King Edward Hotel (Victoria’s Restaurant).

If you have in interest in one or more of these suggestions, please let us know by sending a message to Once we have feedback from residents, we will finalize a schedule. Therefore, we want to hear from you.

Please note that we’d welcome other suggestions, so please forward them to
